At Emersons Green Primary School, our Geography curriculum reflects our mission of Forging Mighty Futures by inspiring children to develop a lifelong passion for learning and empowering them to grow into informed and curious global citizens.
We pursue excellence by building geographical knowledge progressively, starting with the pupils’ local area and extending outward to further countries and continents. Our Geography curriculum teaches children vital geographical skills which foster a deep understanding of the subject and ignite curiosity about the world. These skills include locational knowledge, map and atlas skills, understanding place, human and physical knowledge, and fieldwork. Children will revisit multiple locations, like their local area, UK coastlines, Wales, and Africa, throughout their time at Emersons Green, continuously deepening their understanding of these places and of both the local and distant world.
We champion uniqueness by exploring and appreciating the diversity of a wide variety of locations and cultures around the globe, revisiting and building upon these across year groups. At Emersons Green, our curriculum encourages respect for and understanding of different environments, settlements, places and ways of life across the earth. We have designed a unique and inclusive curriculum that ensures accessibility for every child, allowing them to view themselves as skilled Geographers.
We embrace practice and effort by highlighting core knowledge, revisiting, reinforcing and building upon prior learning, reading and researching widely, and embedding key geographical vocabulary to strengthen a well-rounded understanding. Children build upon their knowledge of place and develop their understanding throughout each unit. They learn and develop curiosity and critical map and atlas skills to deepen their understanding of the human and physical features of each location.
Bravery is built by providing pupils with fieldwork opportunities to apply their knowledge in practical settings, enabling them to observe, collect and analyse geographical data. Children have numerous opportunities to visit places they are learning about, like carrying out investigations of their local area, collecting and analysing weather data in the Brecon Beacons, discovering how settlement use has changed over time at The Big Pit, and investigating how humans are helping to preserve the UK coastlines.
