Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) & Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)
At Emersons Green Primary School, we teach RSE in line with national expectations and guidelines. Our programme of study is based on and adapted from the Jigsaw framework (which itself is based on national expectations). Our programme of study for RSE can be found above (click on the link for ‘PSHE Curriculum Coverage’) and this outlines what we plan to teach to each year group. In line with national expectations, parents only have a right to withdraw their children from aspects of the programme that cover sex education , unless these are part of the Science curriculum. Any request to withdraw a pupil must be made in writing to the Headteacher.
The teaching of RSE does not just include the taught aspects of the curriculum regarding relationships or sex. An important part of RSE is about teaching children how to keep themselves safe, including online, and to understand consent in relation to their own bodies and actions. This is done through classroom learning, assemblies and with the support of relevant outside providers, such as the NSPCC.

- We embrace practice and effort through a whole-school approach that enables consistent engagement and a shared understanding among staff and pupils. Our curriculum is structured around sequential and progressive themes. Each year group engages with the same thematic piece termly, ensuring that the messages are consistent yet tailored to be age-appropriate and are reinforced throughout the school community.
- The pursuit of excellence is evident in the children’s exemplary behaviour, their positive attitudes towards learning, and their mutual respect and care for one another. Meaningful adult/child interactions, fostering our school values at every stage drive the school culture. Within our lessons, children are provided with the opportunity to consider their experiences, thereby gaining insight into how they navigate the complexities of growing up.
- Our PSHE lessons build bravery by empowering children to cultivate their self-belief, recognise their intrinsic value, and accept increasing responsibility for their own learning journey. Beyond the curriculum children engage with a wide range of opportunities; from scooter training to cycling proficiency, from Create centre visits to NSPCC assemblies.
- In championing uniqueness, we encourage children to understand and value their identities, as well as their relationships in an ever-evolving and diverse world. Annual happiness surveys and online pupil surveys enable us to recognise and celebrate individual’s contributions and needs. We create an environment where children feel seen, heard, and appreciated, thereby fostering a sense of belonging that enriches their educational experience.
