At Emersons Green Primary School, our science curriculum embodies our mission of ‘Forging Mighty Futures’ by fostering a passion for learning and preparing children for future challenges. We emphasise the relevance of science in daily life, empowering students to apply their knowledge meaningfully.
- We pursue excellence in teaching Science, by systematically building knowledge and scientific enquiry skills. Our curriculum follows a carefully designed learning sequence, fostering a deep understanding of key concepts and making connections across topics and year groups – for example, the topic ‘Animals including Humans’ is covered many times throughout a child’s time with us. Students work scientifically through practical enquiry, where they develop critical thinking and curiosity by being encouraged to ask questions and explore new ideas.
- We teach about a diverse range of scientists, showcasing contributions from different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives thus championing uniqueness. We study scientists like George Washington Carver, Stephen Hawking and Beatrix Potter. By championing inclusivity, our curriculum broadens students’ understanding and empowers them to see themselves as future scientists. By posing advanced questions and promoting critical analysis, we help the children extend their understanding and reach their full potential.
- Building bravery when teaching Science begins with fostering scientific enquiry, which encourages students to ask questions, investigate and seek answers to the unknown. By engaging students in enquiry-based learning, Science creates a supportive environment where they can step into unfamiliar territory with confidence. As they test hypotheses, encounter challenges and navigate unexpected outcomes, students learn that bravery is essential to discovery and growth. This approach not only builds resilience but also demonstrates that courage is a key component of scientific progress and personal development.
- Through embracing practice and effort, our children develop the skills to explore scientific concepts, expand their scientific vocabulary and build the knowledge required to confidently demonstrate their understanding of the natural world. Through hands-on investigations, they apply their learning, refine their enquiry skills and deepen their understanding of scientific processes.
