Keeping all of our children safe is fundamental to everything that we do in school. We aim to work closely with parents/carers and support agencies in order to ensure that children are safe both within and outside school. We maintain a culture of ‘it could happen’ here to ensure all staff and volunteers are aware of the collective responsibility we all have to safeguard children.
Our Policies
Key systems for ensuring children are kept safe:
- To recognise that all staff have accountability in regard to Child Protection Procedures.
- To keep all staff informed about child protection procedures and issues.
- To provide a clear model for management in case of suspected or disclosed child abuse.
- To provide a model for open and effective communication between children and staff, parents, agencies and other adults working with children.
- To help children acquire skills and attitudes to both resist abuse in their own lives and to prepare them for responsibilities including parenthood in their own lives.
- To encourage children to make reasoned and informed choices, judgements and decisions.
- Follow safer recruitment practices when appointing new staff.
Safeguarding
- The Designated Safeguarding Lead in the school is Mrs Soraya Young.
- The Deputy Safeguarding Officers are: Mrs Laura Morson and Mr Simon Botten.
- The safeguarding governor is Jo Bishop.
Any concerns about how the school deals with safeguarding issues should be referred either to the Chair of Governors, or to the Local Authority Designated Officer, Tina Wilson (Tel: 01454 868 924).
Children: I am a child and I don’t feel safe
If you are scared or don’t feel safe at home or at school you can do one of these things:
- Speak to any other adult in school at any time. We are here to help you.
- Speak to Mrs Young or Mrs Morson. You can send an E-mail to the school office here and they will collect it the next time school is open.
- Phone Childline on 08001111 anytime day or night. They are happy to speak to you about any worries. The call is free.
Adults: What to do if you are concerned about the safety of a child/adult or the conduct of a member of staff
Concerns about a child at home:
If you are concerned about the treatment of a child outside of school either:

Ensuring Good Behaviour
Emersons Green is proud of the outstanding behaviour demonstrated by the children in and around our school. We work hard to ensure that children learn how to be caring, friendly and respectful towards each other. To find out more about how we ensure good behaviour please read the Behaviour Policy.
Preventing Bullying
At Emersons Green we do all that we can to ensure that children are free from bullying in all its forms. Children are taught about bullying during PSHE lessons throughout the year, during our Anti-bullying Week each November and during termly E-safety assemblies.
At Emersons Green Primary School we accept the following as a definition of bullying:
Bullying is when someone (or a group of people) picks on you, hurts you, calls you names, threatens or says nasty things about you, takes your things and friends away and keeps on doing it, making you feel frightened and/or unhappy.
It can be:
- Physical – hitting, kicking, spitting, tripping someone up, stealing/damaging someone’s belongings, etc.
- Verbal – name-calling, insulting a person’s family, threats of physical violence, spreading rumours, constantly putting a person down, etc
- Emotional/psychological – excluding someone from a group, humiliation, creating a feeling of danger, etc.
- Racist – insulting language/gestures based on a person’s actual or perceived ethnic origin or faith, name-calling, graffiti, racially motivated violence, etc.
- Sexual – sexually insulting language/gestures, name-calling, graffiti, unwanted physical contact, etc.
- Homophobic/ Transphobic – insulting language/gestures based on a person’s actual or perceived sexuality, name-calling, graffiti, homophobic/ Transphobic violence, etc.
- Electronic – bullying by text message, bullying on the internet (in chat rooms, on bulletin boards and through instant messaging services), hate websites, etc.
Bullying is the abuse of power by one person or a group over another.
All of the types of behaviour listed above are unacceptable and will not be tolerated at this school. If you or your child are concerned that they are being bullied, please see either the class teacher or Mrs Young or Mrs Morson as soon as possible.

Safeguarding for the Resource Base
Children accessing our Resource Base are fully included within our mainstream provision. The safeguarding of all children is critical however, as a school we recognise and follow the recommendations outlines in the Safeguarding Disabled Children – Practice Guidance https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk . This practice guidance makes clear that disabled children have exactly the same human rights to be safe from abuse and neglect, to be protected from harm and achieve the Every Child Matters outcomes as non-disabled children. Disabled children do however require additional action. This is because they experience greater and created vulnerability as a result of negative attitudes about disabled children and unequal access to services and resources, and because they may have additional needs relating to physical, sensory, cognitive and/ or communication impairments. These additional vulnerabilities are held in mind in all that we do.
